Hacking for Defense® Problem Sponsors Course by NSIN and BMNT

  • Nucleus CoShare 444 East 2nd Street Dayton, OH, 45402 United States (map)

The National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) and BMNT invite prospective Government and Military Sponsors to join a H4D® Problem Sponsors Course in Dayton, OH.

Hacking for Defense (H4D) is a for-credit university course that connects multi-disciplinary students with tough Department of Defense (DoD) and Intelligence Community (IC) problems. Students teams leverage Lean Start-Up methodologies to quickly iterate through possible solutions, working with the problem sponsor to find the most feasible and viable solution to their problem.

The Problem Sponsor is both the owner of the problem and liaison between the student team and the government ecosystem. Sponsors guide the student teams as they work towards the most viable and salient solution while also facilitating their investigation into its root causes.

The H4D course is intentionally fast-paced, requiring problem sponsors to be responsive, answer questions, and facilitate introductions to contacts within the government for student interviews (Please see the “Problem Sponsors Roles and Responsibilities” sheet for further information).

What to expect from this course:
This Problem Sponsor course will provide an overview of the H4D methodology used in current and future H4D courses and teach sponsors how to achieve maximum results from the H4D university course. For potential Government Problem Sponsors from across the DoD and Intelligence Community, the course provides insight into how to best prepare winning problems for what is a very competitive selection process amongst student teams.

Further, the course teaches best practices on how to engage the H4D university class and maximize student expertise in solving tough problems. H4D® was developed by U.S. military combat veterans and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who will share how H4D is delivering solutions to directly support the warfighter and the mission of innovation in national security.

Now in its 4th year, H4D continues to produce impactful results: Real-World Problems: Students work on real-world national security problems and engage directly with the national security leaders responsible for them. To date, nearly 550 Department of Defense (DoD) and Intelligence Community (IC) problems have been addressed in H4D courses.

Real-World Solutions:
Student teams deliver real solutions that are being implemented by the U.S. government — all while moving at the speed of a startup. Thirteen student teams have received funding from the DoD or venture capital to continue work on their respective DoD / IC problems.

Building the Next Generation of National Security Leaders:
H4D is building 21st Century national security leaders. Hundreds of students from across the nation have been introduced to national service and have helped solve the challenging problems facing the DoD and the IC. More than half of those students plan to continue working on their problems following the course.
